CHAR

The brief

CHAR began at SUD as an original project: an AI companion for PC, and eventually mobile, that would be a character rather than a voice assistant. It had to notice what was happening on screen, across games, music and work, speak up at the right moment without getting in the way, and protect its user's privacy.

What we did

We designed Char and built the loop that brings it to life: observe, classify, reason, react. Every two seconds it reads the screen locally, using OCR across several zones and a classifier that recognises the state of play (combat, dialogue, rewards). It picks up the music that's playing, even in the background, and can tell whether you're coding, browsing or working. The AI brain only ever receives processed events, never images of the screen, and writes the reply, which Char delivers in an animated speech bubble over your other windows, timed so it never becomes a nuisance. At its heart is the relationship engine: attachment, trust and mood change over time, care strengthens the bond, neglect leaves a mark, and Char remembers the history you share.

The outcome

The relationship engine is complete and validated, context recognition on PC works and Char's state is saved locally. Char's voice and inference optimisation are under way; next come a hybrid client-server architecture, a pocket companion for smartphones synced with the PC, swappable personalities and an SDK for bringing Char into other apps.
